Three Junior Girls Advance to Fargo Quarterfinals
Five girls total are in the medal hunt
The first day of action is in the books from Fargo, North Dakota. Girl’s wrestling was center stage as the Juniors, and then the 16U girls, started the festivities at the Junior and 16U National Championships.
This tournament, affectionately known as Fargo, is known for being the toughest test in high school wrestling and it showed why on Saturday. Despite taking a strong 16U and Junior team, Virginia only has five wrestlers alive and in the medal hunt.
Still in the running for Junior National championships are Sarissa Tucker (105), Sophia Slaughter (135 lbs), and Mahalia Adams (190 lbs). Each advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinal round. A win in their next match will lock up All-American honors and guarantee them a place in the top six at their respective weights.
Tucker’s results are what we’ve come to expect from her (three falls and a tech); however, she was trailing 6-0 in the second period of her Round of 16 bout and used a sick duckunder for a takedown and a fall.
Slaughter has yet to surrender a point in her run to the quarterfinals. In the Round of 16, she blanked Emmanuel University signee Evelyn Holmes-Smith, 7-0. In her next bout, Slaughter will face 2024 Junior seventh-place finisher Morgan Lucio of Arizona.
Adams didn’t even need the second period to dispatch both of her first two opponents via tech. She’ll now face the top seed in her bracket, Wisconsin’s Brooke Huffman, a 16U national champion a year ago.
Also in the hunt for All-American honors from the consolations are Jenna Anderson at the Junior level and Olivia Mancha in the 16U division. Both will need to win two matches to lock up a spot in the top eight.
Anderson rebounded from an early loss to the top seed in the 115 lb bracket and reeled off three straight wins to put herself in medal contention.
Mancha has already racked up three wins in the 95 lb weight class. She got her hand raised in her first two matches before suffering a loss. She bounced back with a solid 10-4 to keep her medal chances alive.
Both girl's tournaments will conclude on Sunday. Action restarts at 10AM (Eastern) and the finals are slated for 3:30pm.
